This was simply a great read, and one that would appeal to a variety of audiences.  There are many different aspects to this novel and it's totally engaging.  My only caution would be to not attempt to read it when you are tired, as it demands your full attention, especially in the early chapters as you are introduced to a wide variety of characters with either Dutch or Japanese names.

This book has it all; intrique, romance, battles between good and evil, several dramatic plot twists and unpredicability.  The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet will keep you guessing and it will beg to be carried from room to room with you.  I know it is a book that I will recommend in the coming months.
